The Kimberley Bookshop was first established in the early seventies by a Minister of the Broome Uniting Church, it was located in a small room in the front of the Minister’s residence In 1982 the Minister was transferred and the Bookshop had to go.
The Sisters of St John of God felt that the Bookshop fulfilled an important role in town and decided to take it on as part of their ministry. In the early years the Bookshop stocked books, art supplies, stationery and toys, as there were no other outlets in town for these goods.
From humble beginings the Bookshop grew and moved a few times and in 1997 moved to its present location, in one of the Heritage Napier Terrace Cottages. Over the years the Bookshop has hosted many book launches and social gatherings, one of the most notable being the memoirs of Lord Mc Alpine “ Once a Jolly Bagman “ in 1997.
The focus of the Bookshop now remains solely to provide the most comprehensive range of books as possible with the particular emphasis on Kimberley history and culture Featuring a large range of local and Indigenous titles, also many books for booklovers of all ages.
